Frank Broekmans (1956), MD, PhD, is a gynaecologist and Professor in Reproductive Endocrinology and Surgery at the University Medical Center Utrecht. He has combined his academic career at the Department of Reproductive Medicine of the University Medical Centre Utrecht, with clinical work in the Centre for Reproductive Medicine at the Dijklander Ziekenhuis in Purmerend. Since October 2023 he has retired, but has continued advisory roles in Patient care and Scientific projects.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the VU Medical Center Amsterdam in 1983, became consultant OBGYN in 1990, completed a Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine at the VU Medical Center Amsterdam in 1993, and received his PhD degree in 1995. In October 2010 he was appointed Professor at the University Medical Center in Utrecht. From October 2023 he has retired as clinician in reproductive medicine. Today, he is supervising a last PhD student, is the PI of an ongoing study (LUMO study), and has founded FrankSchoolRforL, enabling systematic Education for young doctors entering the field of Reproductive Medicine, and providing Consultation activities for RM care centres and industries in the field of RM.

His scientific career has long been devoted to the field of female reproductive ageing. Special focus has been on the normal ovarian ageing pattern, assessment of actual and future fertility status, genetic backgrounds of the variation in the ovarian ageing process, and the link between vascular and ovarian ageing. Recent focus has moved towards the role of the endometrium in reproductive success. The banking of endometrium tissue from several patient groups has allowed to develop a research line where endometrium organoids are utilised to unravel many functional aspects that could lead to understanding and prevention of several reproductive failure conditions. Within the fields of scientific interest, he obtained several grants from the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research (ZonMW) and the Dutch College for Health Care Insurance. He has published over 312 peer-reviewed scientific papers, contributed 39 book chapters and presented over 180 invited lectures at international meetings.

He has held an Associate Editorship for Human Reproduction between 2005 and 2009, he is the former chairman of the Dutch Flemish Society for Studies on Fertility, he participates in several Advisory boards, is reviewer for Gynaecological Obstetrical Investigation, Fertility Sterility, Human Reproduction, and Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, he was a member of the Institutional Review Board UMC Utrecht between 2012 and 2014, he was chairman of the department Board on Ethical issues in Reproductive Medicine between 2012 and 2015, he was the coordinator of the Board of the Special Interest Group Reproductive Endocrinology of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology between 2015-2017, he was chairman of the pillar Reproductive Medicine of the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology between 2015-2018 and has published over 309 peer-reviewed scientific papers, contributed 39 book chapters and presented over 167 invited lectures at international meetings.

Recently (2025) he has been appointed as Research Manager for the Foundation of Long COVID Research in the Netherlands. His role is stimulating, facilitating and financing of collaboration among Dutch researchers in this demanding and challenging field.

Il a obtenu son diplôme à la faculté de médecine du Centre médical VU d'Amsterdam en 1983, est devenu consultant en obstétrique et gynécologie en 1990, a obtenu une bourse de recherche en médecine reproductive au Centre médical VU d'Amsterdam en 1993 et a obtenu son doctorat en 1995. En octobre 2010, il a été nommé professeur au Centre médical universitaire d'Utrecht. Depuis octobre 2023, il a pris sa retraite en tant que clinicien en médecine reproductive. Aujourd'hui, il supervise un dernier doctorant, est le chercheur principal d'une étude en cours (étude LUMO) et a fondé FrankSchoolRforL, qui permet une formation systématique des jeunes médecins entrant dans le domaine de la médecine reproductive et offre des services de consultation aux centres de soins de médecine reproductive et aux industries du secteur.

Sa carrière scientifique est depuis longtemps consacrée au domaine du vieillissement reproductif féminin. Il s'est particulièrement intéressé au processus normal de vieillissement ovarien, à l'évaluation de la fertilité actuelle et future, aux origines génétiques des variations dans le processus de vieillissement ovarien et au lien entre le vieillissement vasculaire et ovarien. Récemment, il s'est intéressé au rôle de l'endomètre dans la réussite reproductive. La conservation de tissus endométriaux provenant de plusieurs groupes de patientes a permis de développer une ligne de recherche dans laquelle des organoïdes endométriaux sont utilisés pour élucider de nombreux aspects fonctionnels qui pourraient conduire à la compréhension et à la prévention de plusieurs troubles de la reproduction. Dans le cadre de ses domaines d'intérêt scientifique, il a obtenu plusieurs subventions de l'Organisation néerlandaise pour la recherche scientifique (ZonMW) et du Collège néerlandais pour l'assurance maladie. Il a publié plus de 312 articles scientifiques évalués par des pairs, contribué à 39 chapitres de livres et présenté plus de 180 conférences invitées lors de réunions internationales.

Il a été rédacteur en chef adjoint de Human Reproduction entre 2005 et 2009, ancien président de la Société néerlando-flamande pour l'étude de la fertilité, membre de plusieurs comités consultatifs, réviseur pour Gynaecological Obstetrical Investigation, Fertility Sterility, Human Reproduction et Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. il a été membre du comité d'éthique de l'UMC Utrecht entre 2012 et 2014, président du comité départemental sur les questions éthiques en médecine reproductive entre 2012 et 2015, coordinateur du comité du groupe d'intérêt spécial en endocrinologie reproductive de la Société européenne de reproduction humaine et d'embryologie entre 2015 et 2017, il a été président du pilier Médecine reproductive de la Société néerlandaise d'obstétrique et de gynécologie entre 2015 et 2018 et a publié plus de 309 articles scientifiques évalués par des pairs, contribué à 39 chapitres de livres et présenté plus de 167 conférences invitées lors de réunions internationales.

Récemment (2025), il a été nommé directeur de recherche pour la Fondation pour la recherche sur le COVID long aux Pays-Bas. Son rôle consiste à stimuler, faciliter et financer la collaboration entre les chercheurs néerlandais dans ce domaine exigeant et difficile.
